TV Show: Fringe
Episode Title: Subject 9
Original Air Date: October 14, 2011
Episode Number: 4×04
Olivia uncovers a dangerous force that may be connected to Walter’s past experiments with the drug Cortexiphan. Their investigation forces Walter to leave the lab for the first time in years as he and Olivia head to Massive Dynamic in New York to examine old case files. Walter struggles with life outside the lab as he comes face-to-face with the demons of his past.
Peter is finally back and the viewers are happy until that kicker in the last scene. “Who are you?” 😧 This show does tragic stories perfectly and you couldn’t get as tragic as this story. Peter is erased from existence and when he comes back into existence, he’s the only one who remembers how the old reality was like and everyone he loves and cares for don’t remember him at all. Ouch.
I thought this was a pretty great episode with Chadwick Boseman as Cameron James aka Black Panther!!!! I didn’t even know he appeared on Fringe so this was such a nice surprise. Cameron’s life story was also pretty tragic. He was experimented on as a child by Walter and Bell and because of the abilities that he manifested during the trials, he’s not able to have a normal life. On top of that, his father used the experiment trust fund money to fund his drug addiction. It was so sad when he told Olivia before they parted that he wants her to make Walter forget about him.
Peter manifesting himself as an energy force field was extra as hell, lol, but it sure did get the attention of the Fringe team (along with the local authorities and civilians). It’s about time Peter came back and now things will get even more interesting and we will have even more questions and what all this means. Curious that September was there at the lake when Peter resurfaced. What is he planning now?
Loved the scenes of Olivia being very daughterly towards Walter, first at the hotel when she was bandaging his hands and then later on in the restaurant where they were enjoying their root beer floats. This second scene was very daughterly/fatherly with Walter teaching Olivia how to properly drink her root beer float. Very, very sweet scene. In the absence of Peter, Olivia has become like a surrogate daughter to Walter and this just warms my heart. Also, Olivia signing the St. Claire’s letter and acknowledging that Walter doesn’t require hospitalization made me smile.
Other random thoughts and observations:
– Peter at the lake reminded me of Henry Morgan from the TV show Forever (RIP) who would surface at a body of water every time he dies and is resurrected.
– Walter calling Astrid “Claire” is just bizarre, lmao. Astrid’s reaction was priceless. “Really? ‘Claire’? That doesn’t even start with an ‘A.'”
– Nina and Olivia seem to be familiar with each other in that they were talking about that one time Olivia was asked to the prom. Did Nina raise Olivia in this new reality?
– On a shallow note, Anna Torv continues to take my breath away even more so this season. She looked absolutely beautiful in the hotel scene with Walter, in the restaurant scene with Walter, and later on with Cameron in the electrical plant. I actually uttered out loud “WHY IS SHE SO PRETTY?” to myself during the hotel scene, lol.
