TV Show: Black Mirror
Episode Title: White Bear
Original Air Date: February 18, 2013
Episode Number: 2×02
Victoria wakes up and cannot remember anything about her life. Everyone she encounters refuses to communicate with her and enjoys filming her discomfort on their phones. Victoria meets Jem, who explains that a signal is being transmitted that has turned most of the population into dumb voyeurs. This apathy has allowed the unaffected, the ‘hunters’, to do what they want and they are out to get people like her and Victoria. Jem and Victoria set out to destroy the transmitter, but can they manage it and will it end their torment?
I think this was my favorite episode yet of this show because it was non-stop action and suspense and a boat load of WTF-ness. Wow. I was blown away and appalled at the same time by this episode. Is Charlie Brooker okay? How does he come up with all these disturbing and sometimes sickening stories?? Kudos to him, though, because I have to admire someone who has the creativity and, dare I say, genius mind to come up with these twister stories. He must have one hell of an imagination.
This episode was disturbing on so many levels, right up there with the first episode of this show (The National Anthem). I can’t believe the torture that Victoria is put through; yes, what she and her fiance did was unconscionable and unforgivable, but no one deserves to be treated like that for other people’s enjoyment no matter how heinous the crime.
The fact that they turned her into an attraction in what is basically an amusement park is deplorable and I can’t believe people would want to pay to see this show and bring their children with them. They’re all sick in the head, too.
And here I was admiring Jem’s gung-ho and never give up attitude. Little did I know it was all an act.
Lastly, kudos to Lenora Crichlow for what must have been an exhaustive role to play, mentally and physically. Victoria did nothing but scream in pain, cry in anguish, and act scared for the entirety of the episode. I can’t even begin to imagine what her days were like while she was shooting this episode.
