TV Show: Black Mirror
Episode Title: 15 Million Merits
Original Air Date: December 11, 2011
Episode Number: 1×02
Set in a sarcastic version of a future reality, 15 Million Merits is a satire on entertainment shows and our insatiable thirst for distraction. In this world, everyone is confined to a life of strange physical drudgery. The only way to escape this life is to enter the ‘Hot Shot’ talent show and just pray you can impress the judges.
Boy, this episode was a lot. I was so offended by the judges and the audience pressuring Abi into a life of being porn star because it was either that or be subjected to a life of drudgery and pedaling her days on a stationary bike. So fucked up. Bing unable to help her in that instance really fucked him up because he was the one who pressured her to go and perform for the judges in the first place.
Good thing he got out of his funk, but only to become part of the system that he despises. This was a very good commentary about talent shows and being so involved with it and also our constant need to always be plugged in and be entertained either by our phones, TVs, or laptops instead of enjoying life. Hey, I’m not one to cast a stone since I’m guilty of this, too, and I’m disappointed to say that I don’t foresee myself cutting down on spending my time always being plugged in.
How cool to have everything be that accessible to you, though? Then again, I would probably lose my damn mind if I was one of those drones so it’s not worth it.
I did get a laugh out of Bing unable to skip ads without being penalized and losing points. Even in the future, there is no way of escaping ads, lol.
I had a feeling that was Rupert Everett playing Judge Hope. He looked slightly different. I noticed that Dutch from Killjoys was on here playing Selma, the famous singer. She has a good voice!
Kudos to the actor who played Bing. I was riveted by his performance and couldn’t tear my eyes away from him. That was terrific work. I wonder how many times they had to shoot that scene. Must have been exhausting for him if he had to do it more than once.
