“I prefer to call things what they are”

Episode Title: Chapter 60
Original Air Date: May 30, 2017
Episode Number: 5×08

Episode Description

While Frank attends an elite men’s weekend gathering to firm up support, Claire deals with a stranded Russian ship and threats from Petrov.

My Review

Well, this episode was a letdown after the previous episode which was my favorite of this season. It didn’t start out well with the weird cult-like ceremony honoring whatever the hell that was. This is why people hate men like this, the privileged and elitist, for nonsense shit like this. At least Frank got something out of it that could very well win him the presidency. Anyone else laughed when he tripped trying to look for a good cell signal?

The showdown between Petrov and Claire continues and Claire wins this round, but she’s still losing in the bid to get Macallan back. Claire is in a tough position because she can’t possibly broadcast the kidnapping since people will ask who this guy is and why the administration is desperate to get him back. Wouldn’t the best solution be to let Petrov do with Macallan as he well pleases or is Petrov threatening to expose more via WikiLeaks if Claire and company don’t do what he says? I’m a bit confused about this plot (as per the norm this season).

Interesting that Mark Usher is defecting and switching sides to work with the Underwoods. Those recordings of Brockhart and Conway will do their campaign in and Usher is just trying to stay afloat so he’s abandoning the sinking ship before he’s taken down with them. I don’t trust him, though. It seems like he has an ulterior motive aside from wanting to see the Underwoods in office.

Journalist Tom is getting closer to the truth about what happened to Zoe and I can’t wait. Why did his assistant react that way in seeing Zoe’s Washington Herald ID? Didn’t she know Zoe worked for the Herald?

STFU, Boring Tom. No one gives a shit about your boring life. I cringed during his last scene with Claire, but laughed when Claire couldn’t outright admit her feelings about Boring Tom. We all know she doesn’t love him. What is Frank waiting for? Tell Claire about Boring Tom’s indiscretions already so we can be rid of this character.

“He’s a disgruntled hacker”

Episode Title: Chapter 59
Original Air Date: May 30, 2017
Episode Number: 5×07

Episode Description

When a crisis forces White House personnel to take shelter in a bunker, Commerce Department official Jane Davis negotiates through back channels.

My Review

Well, I think this was the first episode this season that I actually liked from beginning to end (not including the brief scenes of Boring Tom). It was engaging, suspenseful, and I don’t think the Underwoods did anything underhanded or committed any illegal acts, lol. I like seeing them work together when they’re up against a unified enemy and it’s moments like this that I couldn’t help but root for them to still come out on top. I’m so conflicted because in the previous episode, I commented that they need to get their comeuppance already.

LeAnn coming to the rescue again, thanks to her contacts, with getting that recording of Brockhart and revealing the link between him and General Braegher which led the Underwoods to think that this whole radiation threat was orchestrated by both generals. So does this mean that Brockhart is probably a goner/no longer a viable VP candidate once this recording comes out?

Did Claire threaten LeAnn when she said that it’s not Macallan they need to worry about, it’s whoever got Macallan into this mess in the first place? Was she talking about LeAnn or was she talking about the Russians? LeAnn did not look happy after that conversation.

Who is Davis and what is the connection between her, Cathy, and Claire? Is she going to help the Underwoods capture Ahmadi?

Frank has pictures of Boring Tom fucking that White House tour guide. Hoo boy, I wonder when he’s going to tell Claire about that. I can’t wait for Claire to rip him a new one. Hmm, will Frank order a hit on Boring Tom after that?

Seth and Sean are still working together and Seth is close to finding out the relationship between Doug and that widow. This should be interesting. I really can’t wait for Seth to expose everything that Doug has done because Doug is a piece of you-know-what. Sean should introduce Seth and Journalist Tom because two heads are better than one! Journalist Tom getting confirmation that Doug, Rachel, and her girlfriend were all acquainted had me rubbing my hands with glee. He’s getting closer.

I hope Nora Cafferty, the one who yelled at Frank and told him that he’s not the president, doesn’t get fired and that she doesn’t quit. She was only doing her job and I’m glad that Claire understood that and told her that people say things in the heat of the moment that they regret, that it’s only human.

Episode Title: Chapter 58
Original Air Date: May 30, 2017
Episode Number: 5×06

Episode Description

In the midst of uncertainty, suspected Russian forces take over an American station in Antarctica. Meanwhile, a damaging news leak could hurt Frank.

My Review

It’s ludicrous having two presidents in office…Petrov is right. “You Americans certainly have a lot of presidents these days.” The presidency is looking like a complete joke right now, well, more like the election process is turning out to be a complete joke. This is why politicians are all liars and can’t be trusted. They will do anything to get what they want and to stay in office.

So did Macallan reach out to the Russians or did the Russians “kidnap” him? I hope he ends up screwing the Underwoods because lord knows they deserve it.

Journalist Tom digging further into Lisa Williams’ connection with Rachel is giving me life. Too bad he fired Sean because he could prove to be an asset in exposing Doug and the Underwoods. Here’s hoping he realizes his mistake and re-hires Sean.

Seth asking Doug flat out if he knows Lisa Williams…it’s getting juicy. And Seth now suspects that Doug is sleeping with the widow. This is all going to come to a head and Doug will get his comeuppance, right??

Boring Tom…so he’s acting out and having sex with anything that walks. Why doesn’t he just break things off with Claire if he’s not satisfied with their relationship? Man the fuck up, dude, and get off my show.

Conway is losing it, yikes. If he’s elected president and he acts like this when the pressure and stress is too much, that’s not good. Is he suffering from some kind of PTSD? He looked kinda stupid doing the VR therapy (but whatever works for him) and Hannah had that look of pity on her face.
