Episode Title: The Same Old Story
Original Air Date: September 16, 2008
Episode Number: 1×02
Olivia, along with Peter and Walter Bishop, investigates the strange death of a woman who had an even stranger child. The woman was pregnant for only hours, yet the baby she birthed was fully developed – and also aged eighty years in the span of a few minutes. Olivia asks Nina Sharp of Massive Dynamic for help.
Leave it up to this show to have a woman have a baby mere minutes after having sex and for that baby to go through rapid aging and then die an old man while the placenta is still attached to his bellybutton. That was one hell of an opener. So gross when we saw the baby growing on the woman’s stomach and moving around like that. I have to remember never to eat anything while watching this show, lol.
So Walter’s old experiments comes back to bite them in the ass. His experiment with Penrose to cultivate and create babies and create soldiers out of them within three years and this being sanctioned by the government is quite disturbing. For all we know, there’s someone out there doing these experiments right now. I thought the rapid aging makeup on Christopher was very well-done and it was somewhat cool to see him start out as his “normal” self and by the end of the chase, he’s an old man.
The scene with Broyles heading that meeting with Nina Sharp as one of the attendants was a bit confusing for me. Who were those other people in the room? Why was Massive Dynamic let in on all these weird events and why did they know about the Pattern?
Again, I continue to love Olivia’s scenes with Nina. I have forgotten about Nina offering Olivia a job and then for Olivia to turn it down (offscreen) and then telling Broyles later on about that conversation and saying “I told her you were going to give me a raise” when he asked her what she said regarding the job offer, lol. Nice move, Dunham.
Walter referencing Peter’s medical history again and almost unknowingly telling Olivia about it made me excited. I can’t believe the show started planting these seeds about Peter this early. I’m quite impressed. Peter singing Row Row Your Boat to calm Walter and help him go to sleep was very sweet.
Walter milking Gene was too funny and it’s even made funnier by the fact that he was doing it like it’s the most normal thing ever. Walter always forgetting that Astrid is there and what her name is and introducing himself to her remains funny. I can’t wait for him to start calling her by her “name(s)”, lol.
I really liked that scene where Olivia apologized to Peter for snapping at him in the lab.
“I’m sorry about the lab. I don’t usually lose control.”
“To tell you the truth, it was kind of a relief. You’ve been so together with everything that’s going on, I was starting to develop an inferiority complex.”
This made me smile. What also made me smile was Walter’s comment “I thought you had a way with women” after Olivia got snippy with Peter.
We got our first Observer sighting (hi, September!) in the hospital scene. I got so excited, lol.
Lastly, I have forgotten that the first season of this show was shot in New York so I’m looking forward to seeing again how they’re going to mask the outdoor scenes and make it look not anything like New York. The scene where Peter and Olivia had their conversation outside on that bench was shot in Central Park.
