Episode Number: 1×04
When dense smog cripples London for days and creates a serious health hazard, Churchill’s inaction leaves him vulnerable to his political enemies.
It’s crazy to think that more than 12,000 people died because of the pollution and they probably could have done something about it. Meanwhile, here in the US, the government has cut down funding to the EPA and it firmly believes that global warming is a conspiracy and is not true. Of course it is.
Venetia getting hit by the bus and dying was something I did not expect. I was really liking her and it’s too bad that she met her demise. At least it wasn’t for naught. It moved Churchill to get off his ass and do something about the smog pollution issue.
I really love Queen Mary’s advice. Every time she opens her mouth, she always has something smart and true to say. “Forget death by lung disease, it’s death by bad conversation.” “To do nothing is the hardest job of all.” Her advice to Elizabeth in the end about suppressing herself in order not to betray any emotion or feeling that would sway the public was a bit extreme, but she is absolutely correct. I feel for Elizabeth losing her sense of identity in the process.
